Version 2.1 of KF-OS 1 adds a section on support plans. A maker conforming to the standard must publish, before a device is first sold, how long spare parts, batteries and firmware fixes will be available, and what will happen to the firmware if support ends early or the maker ceases to exist.
The revision also requires that an implant can be serviced in a clinic with no connection to the maker’s servers. Two makers argued against this in the public consultation; the working group kept it, and published the arguments.
Kiroshi Opticals has said it will apply version 2.1 to every device it sells from now on.
