Twelve Kiroshi Fellows from eight countries began their fellowship year in April, at partner hospitals in Tokyo, Nairobi and Lalitpur.
For the first time, two of the twelve places are in low vision rehabilitation rather than surgery. “For many patients, the operation is not the answer,” said Sugawara Midori, who leads the Foundation’s low vision work. “We need specialists who can help people live well with the sight they have, and there are far too few of them.”
Fellows work as members of clinical teams for twelve months, then return to posts their home institutions have committed to before the fellowship begins. Of the 425 fellows since 1978 whose whereabouts are known, 91% work in their home countries.
The fellows are listed on the fellowships page.
